So what is a British Pantomime?
It's not really a pantomime in the classic French sense (where there are only gestures). It actually uses a lot of dialogue, songs, and interactions with the audience. It's a unique form of entertainment, combining humor, songs, dance, and audience participation, often based on a well-known story or legend. It is especially popular during the holiday season.
Audiences are encouraged to participate by shouting, clapping, and reacting to the actors. The characters often include exaggerated comedic roles, sometimes with men playing female parts and vice versa, which adds a burlesque and fun element. It’s a festive event for families, with jokes and references for both children and adults.
The play is performed in English, with French subtitles.
If you have school-age children, bring them along, especially if they’re learning English! It’s a great opportunity for them to experience an aspect of traditional British culture while having fun.
